Rx Math Strengthening
Mathematical Foundations

Rx for Math is a structured, research-based intervention program developed by the National Institute for Learning Development (NILD). It is designed to strengthen students’ understanding of foundational math concepts while also targeting the cognitive functions that support problem-solving and mathematical reasoning.

Purpose:

The purpose of Rx for Math is to:

  • Help students visualize and understand numbers, patterns and operations

  • Strengthen logical reasoning, mental flexibility and working memory

  • Build confidence and fluency in math

  • Address underlying processing skills that affect mathematical learning—not just content gaps

Who It’s For:

Rx for Math is designed for:

  • Children typically in Grades 3 to 8, though younger or older students can also benefit based on need

  • Students who struggle with math concepts, speed or number sense

  • Learners with math anxiety or processing challenges

  • Those needing targeted intervention beyond traditional tutoring

Methodology:

  • Delivered by a trained NILD educational therapist

  • Combines guided discovery, interactive games and hands-on tools

  • Focuses on building conceptual understanding before rote procedures

  • Incorporates verbalization, visualization and multi-sensory learning strategies

  • Students are encouraged to explain their thinking, recognize patterns and apply math in real-life contexts

Impact and Benefits:

Rx for Math supports:

  • Improved confidence and reduced math-related anxiety

  • Stronger number sense, mental math and flexible thinking

  • Better problem-solving and reasoning skills

  • Increased engagement and motivation toward math

  • Development of executive functions like planning, self-monitoring and persistence

Key Features Parents Should Know:

  • Not a tutoring program—it focuses on how children think and learn math, not just homework help

  • Uses structured, therapeutic techniques to address the root of math struggles

  • Sessions are individualized, allowing the therapist to adjust pace and approach

  • Especially effective when combined with other NILD programs or cognitive therapies

  • Builds lasting math competence, not just short-term performance

Ages: 5 years & above
